Hatteras Island is a barrier island, part of the Outer Banks NC. It includes the towns of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. Hatteras Island divides the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound. Hatteras can be reached from crossing the Bonner Bridge from South Nags Head to the north or by ferry from Ocracoke Island to the south.
Hatteras Island is known for sport fishing, surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding, and is known as “The blue marlin capital of the world.” It measures 42 miles from end to end, making it one of the longest islands in the contiguous United States.
Accommodations range from hotels and condos to luxurious oceanfront cottages. Hatteras Island is often used for destination weddings, family reunions, and special events. Buxton is the largest community by population, and where the residents attend elementary, middle and high school. Buxton is also home to the Cape Hatteras Light.
Beaches: Ocean side has limited parking. Soundside beaches have parking lots and bath houses.
